FIGMENT announces 2009 event dates!

October 13th, 2008

Our dates for the 2009 FIGMENT event will be June 12-14, 2009. We decided to move two weeks earlier so as not to conflict with the Pride weekend in New York (typically the last weekend in June) and not to conflict with the Coney Island Mermaid Parade (typically the third Saturday in June). We actually checked two farmer’s almanacs, and the the weather for June 12-14 looks pretty good, too!

Stay tuned for our Call for Participation, which will be released in early 2009!

Let’s try it again: City of Dreams Mini-Golf Open 10/4

September 30th, 2008

Due to rain on Saturday and Sunday this weekend, the City of Dreams Mini-Golf Open has been postponed to next Saturday, October 4.  Let’s hope for good weather!

———————————–

Come play with us! Participate in the City of Dreams Open and Picnic: a free mini golf tournament and day of games and leisure on Governors Island.  Pack a picnic and lawn or board games and enjoy spectacular city views and a free round of mini-golf!

The event’s centerpiece is FIGMENT’s City of Dreams Mini Golf Course, a nine hole mini golf course, with each hole designed and built by a different artist. We will provide scorecards for this event, and encourage an atmosphere of friendly competition for the Open. Prizes will be awarded to the top scorers by age category, as well as to high performers in several fun categories.

Depending on the number of attendees, there will most likely be a certain amount of wait time.  For this reason, we suggest you plan to make a day of the event, and bring a picnic and games and activities to share while waiting for your tee time.

When: Saturday, October 4, 2008, from 10am to 5pm. Please arrive early, as we anticipate that it may be necessary to wait to get a tee time!

Where: The City of Dreams Mini-Golf Course on Governors Island (behind Liggett Hall) . Free ferries to the island leave every hour from the Battery Maritime Building in lower Manhattan (right next door to the Staten Island Ferry). For ferry schedules and more information see http://www.govisland.com/Visit_the_Island/directions.asp.

Cost: Free, but donations are encouraged to support the expansion of the City of Dreams Mini-Golf Course, next year’s FIGMENT participatory arts event, and other FIGMENT programs.

Other FIGMENT current exhibitions and upcoming events:

  • While you’re on Governors Island, check out the Voyeur photo exhibition in Building 14. Voyeur is a collection of photos from this year’s FIGMENT participatory arts event on Governors Island. Voyeur is open until October 12.

  • Please join us for a FIGMENT brainstorming session on Governors Island on October 4, meeting at 12:30pm in Building 14. Bring your big ideas for art on Governors Island next year’s FIGMENT event. For more information, email us at bigidea@figmentnyc.org.

  • We’re planning an event in October to commemorate the success of the Emergence Exhibition, and to announce the publication of the Catalogue of the exhibition. Catalogues will be available for purchase. Stay tuned for more information!

We are entirely funded by grants and individual donations (no corporate sponsorships!) so we’re counting on you. Click here to donate!

September 26th, 2008

Due to the forecasts for thundershowers through Saturday, we have decided to postpone the City of Dreams Mini-Golf Open until Sunday. Let’s all cross our fingers and hope that we have good weather Sunday! If the weather looks severe for Sunday as well, we will send another email tomorrow, but expect that we will hold the event on Sunday, even if there is some rain.  See you Sunday!

Our City of Dreams Minigolf course opened on Friday, June 27, 2008, and is open every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday until Governors Island closes for the season on October 12, 2008. See the Governors Island website for directions and ferry schedules.

Each of the 9 holes was designed and built by a different artist or team of artists. Theproject is an example of artists working separately, yet together creating a collaborative work of playable, interactive public art.

  • Post your images
Put your images of the City of Dreams Minigolf Course up on Flickr and add them to our photo pool (http://www.flickr.com/groups/cityofdreamsminigolf/), so they’ll show up on the minigolf webpage! (http://www.figmentnyc.org/minigolf)
  • Tell us what you think about the City of Dreams Minigolf Course
Make a comment to this blog post and tell us what you think of the course! We’re gathering all the comments we receive together so we can share them with everyone involved, including the Black Rock Arts Foundation, who provided a grant to make the course happen.
  • Make a donation to support the City of Dreams Minigolf Course and FIGMENT
We are still in need of funds to cover the costs of building the Minigolf course, and to create new programs for next year. If you enjoy the Minigolf coruse, please follow this link to donate to FIGMENT and help us cover our costs and create other works of participatory interactive art: DONATE!

The City of Dreams Minigolf Course is a project of FIGMENT, an annual participatory arts event held on Governors Island. FIGMENT is a project of Action Arts League, and is produced by a coalition of volunteers in partnership with The Pure Project. FIGMENT 2008 is made possible in part with public funds from the Manhattan Community Arts Fund, supported by the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs and administered by the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council. In addition, the City of Dreams Minigolf course is supported by a grant from the Black Rock Arts Foundation.
